Celtics Add No. 6 to Honor Bill Russell

Boston Celtics Add No. 6 to Home Court in Celebration of Bill Russell

The Boston Celtics have added the No. 6 to their home court in honor of legendary center Bill Russell, who passed away in July at the age of 88. The new court features the No. 6 painted in the center circle, along with Russell's signature and the years he played for the Celtics (1956-1969).

Why is there a number 6 painted on the Celtics court?

The No. 6 was Russell's jersey number throughout his career with the Celtics. He is the only player in NBA history to have his jersey number retired by multiple teams (the Celtics and the Golden State Warriors). Russell was a 12-time All-Star, 11-time NBA champion, and five-time MVP. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Why is there a 6 on the Celtics court?

The No. 6 was painted on the Celtics court in 2017 as a part of the team's celebration of Russell's 85th birthday. The number was originally placed at the top of the key, but it was moved to the center circle in 2022.

As a part of the tributes, the Celtics have unveiled a new home parquet court ahead of the 2022-23 season.

The new court features a number of tributes to Russell, including the No. 6 in the center circle, his signature, and the years he played for the Celtics. The court also features a new Celtics logo that incorporates the No. 6.

The in-season tournament officially began Friday night, but the Celtics won't start their group play until next week.

The Celtics will open their group play in the in-season tournament on December 20 against the Miami Heat. They will also play the Toronto Raptors and the Milwaukee Bucks in their group.
